Online Benefit Concert

p2pnet is being sued for libel by Kazaa ceo Nikki Hemming. Kazaa owner Sharman Networks was also after me, but recently dropped out. Anyhow, the Kazaa Kase points up, vividly, the dangers ancient laws present to Freedom of Expression in Canada, even in the digital 21st century. I hate to ask, but defending it will cost a lot of money for what lawyers call disbursements - costs - and this Online Benefit Concert is here to help.

A number of artists have contributed mp3s and the idea is you can either download one or more for free or, if you'd like to help the cause of Freedom of Expression in Canada, you can make a donation for the song or songs in any amount you choose. The songs, together with artists profiles, are below, and we'll be adding new ones regularly. If you'd like to include your song or songs, please send me your mp3(s), or let me know where I can get a copy (as well as details about you) so I can add you to the OBC list.

We'll eventually produce CDs containing selections. For now, Cheers! And thanks for your help and support. Really.

Maggie Council Di Pietra

Ladies first : ) and here's Maggie Council Di Pietra, an award-winning singer-songwriter based in the Tampa Bay, Florida area. She's someone I've known online for years but have never met in person. But one of these days .......

Maggie is working very slowly on a new CD release for 2007; her first in ten years.

In her spare time she likes to stand up for freedom of speech, as well as human and artists' rights. Her day job involves sitting down to write grants for the largest performing arts venue and conservatory in the Southeast US. Maggie is a mother, wife, daughter and sister, but not in that order.

She's also a wonderful friend.

Maggie has also provided 10 copies of her Only Ones CD at a mere $10 each, every penny of which will go into the p2pnet / Freedom of Speech fund. These are artist copies (No fancy covers) but I'll be happy to provide scans for anyone who wants one. The album includes Bingo Bus on the Trail of Tears; Fear; Only Ones; Big Ship; Big Yellow Ball; Spirit Hands; Catching Heaven; Waves; and, Turtle Island.

If you'd like an Only Ones CD, email jon @ p2pnet.net.

Jason Rohrer

Jason is a free software programmer and an activist for personal freedom. He lives in Potsdam, New York with his spouse and child.

During high school and college, he spent quite a bit of time working on music, mostly experimental and computer-generated. At the time, his main influences were minimalist composers such as Reich and Glass. But he was also influenced quite a bit by the early ambient explorations of Brian Eno and by the end of his sophomore year in college, he'd released a full CD of my work.

These days, he's more interested in human-generated music and has been teaching himself to play accoustic guitar.

(Not at all incidentally, Jason coded the Online Benefit Concert page and is also the author of the brilliant, and independent, MUTE p2p file sharing application.)

Ten Mile Tide

Ten Mile Tide is a San Francisco-based acoustic-rock band. For years it was the unofficial poster band for Kazaa, appearing in Sharman Network-sponsored ad and publicity campaigns. And even before the ad campaign, it was one of the most downloaded groups on Kazaa with more that 10 million downloads worldwide.

But, "We don't agree with the culture of litigation that's threatening to consume the music industry and have cut our ties with Kazaa in response to this lawsuit," says co-founder Jason Munning.

Ten Mile Tide is now offering its album mp3s for free download from its site.

Check them out.

Dennis O'Toole

Dennis O'Toole has been writing and performing 'Songs I wrote or wish I had' for more than 35 years. He's done gigs in taverns and dancehalls, folk festivals and streetcorners; everything from solo to the recent 11-piece horn band the 'Rocket(88)Revue', a rockin' R&B ensemble that also features Jerome Godboo on harmonica & vocals and Canada's own Mr Soul, Buzz Thompson on occasion.

Dennis could be up there raking it in but instead, he devotes a large part (most?) of his time to working with challenged kids in the schools and on the streets.

"I broke my self-imposed 5km perimeter for gigs to attend the benefit for my old friend Jon Newton at the Rivoli," he says. "And I was happy to be included."

He's also donated a number of his now scarce CDs to the cause. On it you'll find Love Will Bring you to your Knees; Where Dreams Take You; Three Kinds of Fool; Meadowlark Grove; Gypsy Myth; Heat Lightning; To Grow Old Together; Eye of the Beholder; Thoughts in D.I.B.; Coyote's Call; Nero's Ground Zero Blues; Talking in Tongues; 'Lovers' is Just Too Hard; and, Ageless Lullabye.

Dennis is easy to find in Peterborough Ontario, Canada. If you'd like a Dennis O'Toole CD for $10, email jon @ p2pnet.net.
